The Black Hills Gold Legend

The 1876 gold rush brought all sorts of characters to the Black Hills, including French jeweler Henri LeBeau who hoped to strike gold and make his fortune.

Legend has it that LeBeau, unfamiliar with the territory, became lost in the Black Hills wilderness. He collapsed of exhaustion and dreamed of lush grape vineyards from his home country. After awaking starved and parched, LeBeau luckily stumbled across native South Dakotan grapevines growing near a creek. LeBeau's life was saved and a legend was born.

In honor of the lifesaving grapes, LeBeau crafted gold 'good luck' jewelry featuring a tri-color yellow, green, and pink gold design of grapevine and leaf motif. The trend spread among other miners hoping for a little luck and LeBeau's jewelry soon became known as Black Hills Gold.

A unique piece, every time

As in the days of the gold rush, handcrafted Black Hills Gold jewelry still requires dozens of steps to create each finished piece. From the initial design to the final polish, all steps are carefully guided by trained artisans. 

Automated machinery could be used for many of these steps, and is by some other Black Hills Gold manufacturers, but the jewelry tends to have a cookie cutter look with little individuality. In our Landstroms and Mt. Rushmore Black Hills Gold however, we choose to hand-craft each piece so that no two are ever exactly alike.
